Bean & Cheese is an art publication celebrating rasquache art and artists from San Antonio, TX. As described by Tomás Ybarro-Frausto, “very generally, rasquachismo is an underdog perspective—a view of los de abajo. An attitude rooted in resourcefulness and adaptability yet mindful of stance and style...In the realm of taste, to be rasquache is to be unfettered and unrestrained, to favor the elaborate over the simple, the flamboyant over the severe...The rasquache inclination piles pattern on pattern filling all available space with bold display. Ornamentation and elaboration prevail, joined to a delight for texture and sensuous surface.” Using this ethos as a guide, I created a magazine out of every day materials: a duct-tape spine and an oil-cloth cover. The pages are printed on thin Japanese paper and trimmed with deckled edges. Alternating between text and image, the narrative does away with borders, striving to find that magical quality that elevates the normal to the sublime.

Paradoxically, while elborate is preferred to understatement, high value is placed on making do—hacer rendir las cosas. Limited resouces means mending, refixing, and reusing everything.
This constant making do, the grit and obstinance of survival played out against a relish for surface display and flash creates a florid milieu of admixtures and recombinations.
Throughout there is a profusion of textures, colors, and a jumble of things weathering and discoloring.
